Luggage input wanted!!

Hello!

I'm going to be spending a lot of time in India in the future, but am in the States right now. I'm looking for advice, particularly from people who live/have lived in India on what sort of luggage to buy-- I don't have a set as of yet.

Should I get "American" luggage (ie. the roll-along, wheeled suitcases and duffel bags), or is something else a better idea?

Secondly, does travel WITHIN the country call perhaps for different luggage than travel TO India?

Thirdly... I haven't been there yet. :) How large of a problem is theft of luggage (or out of luggage) while travelling in the country?
